Position Title: Conductor/Music Director

Organization: Ottumwa Symphony Youth Orchestra (OSYO)
Location: Ottumwa, Iowa
Season: 2026–2027

About the Organization
The Ottumwa Symphony Youth Orchestra is a regional ensemble dedicated to providing high‑quality orchestral training to young musicians from fifth to twelfth grade. OSYO offers students the opportunity to rehearse and perform in a supportive, musically enriching environment, including collaborative experiences with the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra.

Position Summary
The Conductor/Music Director is responsible for the artistic leadership, musical preparation, and performance direction of the Ottumwa Symphony Youth Orchestra. This role includes selecting repertoire, leading rehearsals, fostering musical growth, and collaborating with OSO leadership and families.

Season Structure

  • Fall Semester:
    • Ten‑week rehearsal cycle; Sundays, 1:00–3:00 p.m. (September–November),culminating in a fall concert in November
  • Spring Semester:
    • Rehearsals resume in January
    • Side‑by‑side performance with the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra in February
    • Continued rehearsals leading to the Spring Concert in March 2027

 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct all rehearsals and performances
  • Select appropriate repertoire for a developing youth ensemble
  • Provide structure, musical instruction, leadership, and encouragement to students
  • Communicate effectively with families, staff, and community partners
  • Support the educational mission
